Anchor Brewing prides itself on being America's first and oldest craft brewery. Its tradition goes back to the glorious times of the gold rush and brewing is still done in the copper kettles from back then. Anchor Brewing is the perfect symbiosis of the classic art of brewing and state-of-the-art technology.
And they are still making great beers like Steam Beer!
In good and in bad times
Lured by the irresistible splendor of the gold rush, the German brewer Gottlieb Brekle came to San Francisco with his family in 1849. For 3,500 US dollars he bought a saloon where you could play a game of pool with a good beer. Brekle quickly turned it into his own brewery and thus laid the foundation stone of the Anchor Brewery. Brekel's successors Ernst Baruth and Otto Schinkel Jr. gave the brewery the name Anchor Brewery. Nobody knows why the two rightly chose this name, but rumor has it that it was a tribute to the prosperous port of San Francisco. However, the years 1906 and 1907 were not going to be good years for the brewery: After Ernst's sudden death surprised everyone, two months later a devastating fire raged, which was followed by a terrible earthquake. Only shortly after the brewery reopened at its new location, Otto was run over by a car. Fortunately, the two German brewers Joseph Kraus and August Meyer managed to keep Anchor alive.
In the times of the great prohibition, production was completely stopped and there was no sale by the brewery, regardless of whether it was legal or illegal. If those times weren't bad enough, the reopened brewery burned down again shortly after the prohibition was lifted.

But 100 years after the future owner Fritz Maytag took over the brewery, the bottling of Anchor beer began and the beer revolution in San Francisco began. Beers like Liberty Ale quickly became a crowd puller and made the brewery known and popular far beyond the city limits of Fog City.
Today, the Anchor Brewery is one of the most traditional breweries in America and is hailed as the pioneer of the craft beer movement in the States and around the world.
Avant-garde or not, we love the honest, down-to-earth beers at Anchor Brewery!
